MSG - What's the big fuss about, you idiots?!

by Constance Birkbeck

Now, as an ex-pat lifestyle guide magazine that relies on foreigners staying in China and thus necessarily consuming huge amounts of MSG, you may think that we would be biased in the MSG good / bad debate. But instead of remembering that, think of juicy sweet and sour pork and Pringles while you read this:

MSG is good. Normally ex-pat magazines pump out an article every now and then on this issue. The usual format is to pretend to be unbiased and consider all points of view, then tell you that MSG is good. Well, I am not going to slavishly follow tradition. No weighing of conflicting opinions for yours truly, no word tricks or devilish trick methods to make you think that you are reading a fair and honest article here.

MSG makes meat nicer, MSG helps reduce weight. MSG improves people's appetites, MSG keeps away tigers, MSG helps fight and prevent most major diseases afflicting humanity in the early 21st Century.

MSG breaks down pollution in the air, MSG improves people's luck, MSG improves your appreciation of music and fine arts. MSG helps children to learn in school, and improves their attention levels at all times.

MSG allows cats to see better in the dark, MSG promotes peace, MSG helps criminals repent, MSG decreases incidents of engine failure on passenger aircraft.

In short, MSG is good. Stay in China, keep eating it, and keep reading our website.
